New Delhi . The position of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) seems to be weakening before the upcoming mayor elections. The BJP is throwing full strength for the mayor’s election to be held in April. The BJP currently has 131 votes while the majority figure is 132–133. On the other hand, AAP has 122 votes and she can reach the majority only if Congress and an independent councilor support it. In the 2022 Municipal Corporation elections, AAP won a majority by ending the 15 -year -long rule of BJP. After this, Shelley Oberoi became the first mayor of AAP in February 2023 and Mahesh Khichi became the second mayor in November 2024.
However, the party has not met its election promises. Major promises such as landfill removal, regularizing contract workers and solutions to parking problems are still incomplete. In the 2025 assembly elections, AAP lost a crushing defeat and his seats were reduced from 62 to 22. This has weakened his political situation. The BJP now seems confident of returning to MCD again.
Currently there are 250 wards in MCD, out of which 12 seats are vacant. Of these, 11 councilors have become MLAs (BJP 7, AAP 4) and one councilor Kamaljeet Sehrawat has won the Lok Sabha elections. Election mayor on these seats will be held after the election. At present, MCD has a total of 238 councilors. Apart from this, 14 MLAs nominated by the Speaker and 10 MPs (7 Lok Sabha, 3 Rajya Sabha) will vote in the mayor elections.
According to the current number, AAP has 116 councilors, while BJP has 113. The Congress has 8 and one independent councilors. AAP had 134 councilors after the 2022 election, which has now come down to 116. This decline is due to differences with internal discord (such as Swati Maliwal) and differences with the Congress. Due to this, access to the mayor’s chair can be easier for the BJP.
