New Delhi. The southwest monsoon is getting stronger continuously. The predictions made earlier by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) are proving to be true. IMD had predicted more than average rainfall in the monsoon season this time. The Southwest Monsoon, which arrived in Kerala before time, has started showing its effect in the coastal areas. Monsoon has become active in most areas of the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra are receiving torrential rains. IMD has issued a forecast of heavy to very heavy rains in the coastal areas of these states. Regarding this, a yellow alert has been issued for some districts and an orange alert for some places.
As the southwest monsoon continues to lash Kerala, the IMD on Saturday issued an ‘orange alert’ in five districts of the state, predicting heavy rains. According to the IMD, the southern district of Pathanamthitta and the northern districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod have been issued an orange alert for the day. The weather agency has also issued a yellow alert for 8 districts of the state, warning of heavy rains in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram. The red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rain of more than 20 cm in 24 hours, while the orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm and the yellow alert means heavy rain between 6 cm and 11 cm.
Rain will wreak havoc for five days, the situation here is the worst, western disturbance will bring devastation
A word of caution though
Heavy rains pose dangers, so the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised people to remain alert. Meanwhile, district officials said that the gates of the Aruvikkara dam in Thiruvananthapuram were raised by 25 cm on Saturday morning. They said that the gates may be raised further in the coming hours and people living nearby should be cautious. Meteorologists have said that the pace of monsoon has gained further momentum due to the impact of cyclonic storm Remal.
Silence spread on Goa beach
Due to the onset of pre-monsoon rains in Goa, the beaches of the state, which are usually crowded with tourists and locals, are now deserted. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Goa on Friday. Heavy rains are also forecast for the next four days. Although the southwest monsoon has not yet reached Goa, rains have started in the coastal states from Friday. Local fishermen said that fishing with motor boats has been banned from June 1 to July 31. Only traditional fishermen have been allowed to fish for some period. Drishti Lifesaving Services, an agency appointed by the state government, has put up red flags along the coast, while its personnel are also patrolling the beaches.
