Rescue operations to find over 45 missing people were underway on Friday after a cloudburst triggered flash floods in three districts of Himachal Pradesh. Giving this information, officials also said that 29 people trapped at a power project site in the state were rescued safely after an overnight operation. Five people were killed and over 45 went missing in flash floods following a cloudburst in Nirmand, Sainj and Malana areas of Kullu district, Padhar in Mandi and Rampur in Shimla district on Wednesday. 33 people were also trapped at the Malana II power project in the district’s Manikaran area. Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S. Ravish said that 29 out of 33 people have been rescued.

Rescue operation of NDRF and Home Guard team continues

Due to rain, the wall and path of a tunnel got damaged and water entered the barrage. But the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Home Guard teams were able to rescue 29 people, while four people are still in the power house. Officials said that the Army, NDRF, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, State Disaster Response Force, Police and Home Guard are carrying out rescue operations at the spot. Drones are also being used to search for the missing people. The relatives of the victims are also waiting for the well-being of their loved ones. The most damage has been done in Samej area of Rampur subdivision of Shimla district. Here on Wednesday night, due to cloudburst near Shrikhand Mahadev, Sarpara, Ganvi and Kurban drains suddenly got flooded.

Search has to be done in an area of 100 km

Shimla Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi told PTI that flash floods led to the water level rising in Samej Khud (drain) in Rampur of Shimla district, killing two people and leaving about 30 missing. “We have to search in about 100 km area, some of which are inaccessible, and drones are being used to locate the missing people,” Gandhi told PTI on Thursday. Nali Ram, a senior citizen who escaped the flash floods with his family, said, “I heard the sound of rushing water and came out of my house and found that the surrounding area was submerged in floods.” The overflowing of Samej Khud caused havoc in Shimla and Kullu districts.

So far 73 people have died due to rain related incidents

Another local resident Neel Dutt said, “My father-in-law was working on a project. There is no information about him since last night. I have come here with my family to search for him.” According to reports, more than 20 houses, six shops, four main bridges and two foot bridges were washed away in floodwaters after the cloudburst in the state. Road connectivity has been disrupted in the affected areas. According to the state emergency operation center, 73 people have died in rain-related incidents since the onset of monsoon on June 27 and the state has also suffered a loss of Rs 649 crore.
