On the other hand, the other big news is that Modi 3.0 government has given a big gift to the religious and tourist city by changing the name of Joshimath city. People are happy after the years long demand has been fulfilled. But before the Badrinath assembly by-election, political discussions have also started regarding the mythological name.
Joshimath town will be known as Jyotirmath. After getting the green signal from the central government, the name of Joshimath town has been changed. On 25 December 2021, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced this name during the Vijay Sankalp Yatra in Tharali assembly and the final decision on this was taken by the Modi government at the Center on 12 June 2024. The local people are very happy to remove the new name and keep the old name.
After this decision, sweets were distributed and fireworks were done in Shankaracharya Mathas. Around 1962, the name of Jyotirmath was changed to Joshimath. After that, the Shankaracharyas of Jyotirmath raised a lot of objections to this name and tried to retain the ancient name. In 2016, Late Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati Maharaj raised his voice to change the name of Joshimath to Jyotirmath.
