Kolkata/Abhijit Majumdar. With the CBI investigating the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, it has landed in a complex and difficult situation that could lead to many revelations. With various claims being made in West Bengal about the incident, such as a state-wide fake medicine racket in medical colleges and hospitals, a cash or marks for sex scam, a prostitution gang, or even videos of necrophilia, the CBI could be fooled in this case.
As bizarre as all these theories may sound, two things seem quite possible:
, Given the extent of the brutality inflicted on the victim, the doctors’ statements on the amount of semen found inside her, and that no one even heard her screams, this smacks of premeditated gang rape and murder, not a regular rape. The only arrested accused so far, Sanjoy Roy, who is known as a ‘freak’ in the hospital sector and was also a civilian volunteer for the Kolkata Police, could not have done this on his own.
, The alacrity with which the incident was tried to be covered up – from initially calling it a suicide to transferring controversial RG Kar Hospital principal Dr Sandip Ghose to Calcutta National Medical College in the same capacity, to breaking into RG Kar Hospital on the night of August 14 and vandalising it and possibly trying to destroy crucial evidence, as well as renovating parts of the hospital soon after the horror – suggests there is something bigger at play. Could this case shake the foundations of some powerful political establishments in West Bengal? Only time will tell.
At present, the question before the CBI investigation is whether the murder was done to hide the rape or the rape was done to divert attention from the murder. Did the young trainee doctor come to know something big? Is RG Kar Hospital the center of something completely secret? After all, many types of news reports related to the hospital have been coming out over the years.
, Porn gang behind murder of student at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College – Times of India headline on November 7, 2001.
, RG Kar housestaff commits suicide inside hospital – TOI, February 6, 2003 news.
, Room locked from inside: RG Kar professor’s mutilated body found at home – TOI, October 24, 2016 news.
, Kolkata: Junior doctor jumps from sixth floor of Covid-19 hospital, dies – Indian Express, May 1, 2020.
, Medical student dies while trekking in Uttarakhand – TOI, January 22, 2023 news.
, Intern dies of ‘drug overdose’ at RG Kar Hospital – TOI, August 13, 2023.
Now the question is bound to arise: Are these incidents, which appear separate over the years, actually tied by a common thread? It is reported that the CBI has already questioned the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, twice. It is apparently asking him questions like:
