Landslides at many places in Wayanad, Kerala

A disaster has descended from the sky in Kerala’s hilly district Wayanad. Several incidents of landslides have been reported after heavy rains in many places on Tuesday morning. The death toll in Wayanad district due to landslides has risen to 123. Hundreds of people are still feared to be trapped under the debris. Local officials say that the death toll may increase further. The relief and rescue operation has been speeded up.

Two days of mourning in the state

Kerala Chief Minister Vijayan has expressed deep grief over the death of so many people in the landslide caused by rain. The Chief Minister said that the state government is very saddened by this incident, in which many people have lost their lives. Property has been damaged on a large scale. Along with this, the CM has declared two days of mourning (30 and 31 July) from Tuesday. All public functions and festivals have also been postponed in the state.

Former Wayanad MP expressed grief

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and former MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi has expressed grief over the deaths caused by the landslide. Rahul Gandhi said that people sleeping in their homes early on Tuesday did not even get a chance to escape. The landslide has left a trail of destruction. Many houses have been razed to the ground. Rivers are in spate and many trees have been uprooted.

Army and NDRF are carrying out relief and rescue operations

Army, Navy and NDRF personnel engaged in rescue work

After several incidents of landslides were reported in the district, the Army, Navy and NDRF personnel got involved in the rescue work. The search for the victims of the accident was carried out amid bad weather, which continued till late night. Many agencies are working together to provide necessary assistance to the victims.

Landslides occurred in these villages of Wayanad

During the day, rescue workers recovered bodies from rivers and mud. The deceased included many women and children and the bodies were kept in various hospitals for identification and postmortem. Officials said the landslide-affected areas include Mundakkai, Choorlammala, Attmala and Noolpuzha villages.
