This summer has broken all the records of high temperature in Delhi and there is no sign of any relief. In such a situation, have you ever wondered why the heat runs away as soon as you enter the Delhi Metro train, why do you feel cold many times? Whereas you do not even see fans or coolers and ACs hanging in the railway trains inside the metro. However, due to the coolness, travelling in metro trains becomes very easy even in the scorching heat.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has given interesting information about the metro trains that provide AC travel in the scorching heat. DMRC informed that not only metro trains but metro stations also have air conditioners, but the weather at stations is not as cool as it is in metro trains, there are reasons for this too.

Delhi Metro said that trains are providing facilities to passengers with 4200 trips covering a distance of about 1.40 lakh kilometres every day. To beat the heat in metro trains, AC is run at 24 degrees Celsius throughout the day. The temperature inside the entire metro train is the same.
Delhi Metro said that in summer, ACs in homes often stop working due to power cuts but there has never been a single such incident in Delhi Metro where trains or underground stations which are designed for air conditioning have had a breakdown or AC failure.
Currently, DMRC has a fleet of more than 345 trains in which about 5000 AC units are installed. To ensure that there is no breakdown in the summer and all ACs work properly, the fitness of these AC units is checked every year before the onset of summer in March. Apart from this, regular maintenance of these AC units is also done every three months. Also, train operators regularly monitor the temperature of the coach to immediately resolve any problem related to temperature variation and to ensure a pleasant journey for the passengers.
Similarly, state-of-the-art Building Management System (BMS) and Chiller Plan Manager (CPM) have also been installed to remotely monitor and control all underground station air conditioning equipment or units. This system constantly monitors the ambient and station temperature on a real-time basis and takes action to maintain the metro station temperature between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius even when the outside temperature is between 45 and 50 degrees Celsius.
Not only this, regular inspections are being carried out on heat-sensitive infrastructure components such as escalators and elevators to prevent malfunctions. To prevent any incident of fire, which is a common occurrence during such heat waves, DMRC has a robust system of fire extinguishers and hoses at its stations, which are regularly maintained at strategic locations in and around the metro premises. The sprinkler system is regularly checked and maintained so that it can be activated immediately in case of a fire.
Let us tell you that due to heat, a record high of 60.17 lakh journeys have been recorded in May 2024 as compared to 52.41 lakh journeys recorded in May 2023. This makes it clear that metro is a safe mode of transport in summer.
