In fact, the Central Government told the Parliament on Tuesday that in the year 2023, about 30.5 lakh cases of dog bites were reported, in which 286 people died.
Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, ‘According to the data recorded in the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program implemented by the Ministry of Health, a total of 30,43,339 cases of dog bites were reported during 2023. This year 286 people died due to dog bites.’
According to the report of the National Center for Disease Control, the number of anti-rabies shots for dog bite cases during 2023 was 46.5 lakh. The Ministry of Health has been implementing the National Rabies Control Program since the 12th Five Year Plan in all states and union territories except Andaman and Lakshadweep for the prevention and control of rabies in the country. He said, ‘State governments can also use the funds for rabies vaccination.’
