Does kissing cause infection? If you are afraid, know the truth from an expert

Kissing and STIs: Kissing is a pleasant feeling between partners in romantic moments. But many people often have various questions in their minds about kissing. Like whether kissing alone causes STI or sexually transmitted infection. It is believed that the risk of infection in kissing is very low but this does not mean that there is absolutely no risk. Cleveland Clinic Dr. Antonia Nia, a physician and medicine specialist, says that STI can be contracted even by just kissing. Therefore, you should know under which conditions this disease occurs.

These infections are caused by kissing

1. Herpes-Dr. Antonia says that even if you just kiss, saliva goes into each other’s mouth. Every human body already has many types of viruses and bacteria. Therefore, these viruses and bacteria can also go to each other through saliva. During kissing, the risk of infection from herpes viruses HSV 1 and HSV 2 is the highest. If infection occurs due to this, then blisters or wounds appear in the mouth. If it is severe, it also hurts.

2. CMV-There is a risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection by kissing. CMV infection can occur through saliva, urine, blood, semen, cervical secretions, breast milk, etc. This infection can cause problems like fever, fatigue, muscle cramps, sore throat, etc.

3. Epstein Barr Virus- Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) virus infection can spread through kissing, sexual activity, coughing, sneezing, toothbrushing etc. This infection can also occur just by kissing. It can cause problems like sore throat, weakness, fatigue, skin rashes etc.

4. Syphilis-Syphilis is a bacterial infection that can happen through many means. It happens through physical relationship but syphilis can also happen after deep kissing.

5. Mpox-Ampox is just like smallpox. This disease is transmitted by any kind of physical contact but it can also be transmitted if you just kiss deeply.

So what should you not kiss

Dr. Antonia says that certainly the risk of STI or infection is very low just by kissing because there are many viruses or bacteria that are present in everyone and their effect is very minor. But if you kiss along with having an intimate (oral) relationship, then the risk of infection will increase during the kiss. Therefore, protection should be used during this time. The more safe you behave, the more beneficial it will be.
