DoT Blocked SIM Cards
DoT has once again taken strict action and blocked more than 30 thousand SIM cards. The Department of Telecommunications has taken this action to curb the increasing cyber crimes in the country. The Department of Telecommunications has earlier also banned thousands of mobile numbers due to fraud. Recently, a new case of scam in the name of Electricity Bill KYC has come to light, in which many people have been duped.
To curb this new scam, the Department of Telecommunications has ordered to block thousands of SIM cards as well as 392 mobile handsets. These are the same mobile handsets that were used for the Electricity Bill KYC Scam.
This is how scammers set their trap
In this new scam, scammers sent messages to people via SMS or WhatsApp from these blocked mobile handsets, in which users were asked to update their KYC information like their name, mobile number etc. If this is not done, the connection will be disconnected. Links were given in the messages sent by the scammers, after clicking on which these details reach the scammers. By doing this, scammers get access to the personal information of the people and then these details are used to commit fraud.
DoT has taken this action on the basis of complaints received from people on the new Chakshu portal. During investigation, the Department of Telecommunications has found more than 31,740 mobile numbers along with 392 mobile handsets involved in this scam. After this, the Department of Telecommunications has issued orders to telecom operators to block these SIM cards.
