World number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia registered his first win of the year by beating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-3 at the Dubai Championships here. Djokovic was unable to defend his title at the Australian Open last month for not being vaccinated.
His visa was canceled after reaching Melbourne. The United Arab Emirates granted him permission for this tournament and Novak has started with a win in the tournament he has won five times.
landed after a break of two and a half months
Djokovic said that he is satisfied with the victory in his first match playing after almost two-and-a-half months. Mussetti won two sets against him at the French Open last year, but in Dubai, Djokovic did not give his opponent a chance before entering with a wild cord. Now he will face Karen Khachanov.
Djokovic’s win-loss record in Dubai has gone up to 42-6. In a match that lasted 74 minutes, Djokovic scored 13 winners including five aces. After the match, Djokovic said- There were some occasions when I played well and made some inappropriate mistakes, but when you are playing the match after a long time, it can happen.
Murray got victory in three hours
In another match, Britain’s Andy Murray defeated Australian qualifier Christopher Connell 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-5 in a match that lasted almost three hours. This is his first victory here since the 2017 title win.
Medvedev can snatch Djokovic’s number one chair
Nowak’s number one chair is in danger. He is facing a tough challenge from Daniil Medvedev of Russia to defend his top ranking. If Medvedev manages to win the title at the tournament in Mexico, Djokovic will replace Djokovic from the number one chair on February 28.
If Medvedev succeeds, he will be the third Russian to do so after Yevgeny Kafilnikov (1999) and Marat Safin (2000-01). Apart from the Big Four (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Andy Murray), the last player to finish number one was Andy Roddick, who reached the top on February 1, 2004. When Djokovic was asked about this, he said that if Medvedev becomes number one, then first of all I would congratulate him.
