Imphal: Due to bad weather, all schools and colleges in Manipur will remain closed till May 7. The state government made this announcement on Monday. One person died and two were injured on Sunday as heavy rain and hailstorm lashed the state, an official said. Due to this, many houses were damaged in different parts of the state including Kanchipur and Tera in Imphal West district and Thoubal district.
Education Directorate issued order
The Directorate of Education issued an order late on Sunday night, saying that due to hailstorm today (Sunday), there has been extensive damage to many houses and establishments across the state and there is a possibility of similar situation in future also. She said that keeping in mind the safety of children, all government and private schools in the state will remain closed on May 6 and 7.
CM appealed to the people
Chief Minister N Biren Singh said in a post on Facebook that “The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure against the threats posed by the current weather conditions. I urge everyone to stay updated and stay safe indoors The state government is taking all necessary steps to protect lives and properties and assist the affected people.”
Heavy rain on Sunday
Let us inform that on Sunday, hundreds of houses were damaged due to heavy rain and hailstorm in the state. There has been more damage especially in Imphal Valley. A 45-year-old man died while his wife was injured after being struck by lightning during rain in Yangdong in Kakching district on Sunday afternoon. He was in his vegetable field during the accident. Meanwhile, a 53-year-old man was injured due to lightning in Nambol in Bishnupur district. He was admitted to the hospital.
Orange alert issued
The state government has directed District Deputy Commissioners to submit reports of damage caused by heavy rains and hailstorm in their districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an “Orange Alert” warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in four north eastern states including Manipur for the next 24 hours from May 5.
