E-commerce exports by country To promote e-commerce, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) is working in collaboration with the Revenue Department. Under this, designated e-commerce centers will be set up across the country to streamline the process of online exports. According to industry sources, at present the country’s e-commerce exports are two billion dollars, while China’s exports are $ 350 billion. He said that the government aims to bridge this gap by establishing a collaborative e-commerce ecosystem.
Working in collaboration with the Revenue Department
Director General of Foreign Trade Santosh Kumar Sarangi said, “A lot of things need to be streamlined in this regard. We are working with the Revenue Department to set up e-commerce centers to expedite the clearance of consignments.” He said these centers will have facilities like dedicated customs and security checks, so that pre-cleared parcels can be moved through the ‘green channel’ at airports and there will be no need to check them further.
The government will look after security and fees
Sarangi said that this approach reflects the best practices adopted in other countries. He informed that the e-commerce center will be built and maintained by private entities, while the government will look after security and customs clearance. On the other hand, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare on Tuesday warned e-commerce companies against implementing deceptive user interface designs known as ‘dark patterns’. He said that such behavior is a violation of consumer rights and is like unfair business.
