Former Punjab CM and Congress candidate from Jalandhar Charanjit Singh Channi’s troubles may increase as his statement regarding the Poonch attack may land him in trouble, which may result in action against him. Channi’s statement was considered a violation of the election code of conduct. Now Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C has sent a letter to the Election Commission of India regarding this matter.
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C termed Congress candidate Channi’s statement about the Poonch terror attack as an election stunt and said it was a violation of the model code of conduct. Sibin C has demanded action against Channi in a letter sent to the Election Commission of India on Monday. As a result, the Election Commission’s response to this issue is important.
Channi’s statement regarding the Poonch terror attack was termed as an election stunt. While talking to journalists, he described the terrorist incident in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir as a political stunt. He said that whenever elections come near, such stunts are done. His statement sparked a political controversy, which was criticized by various political parties including the Congress. BJP also strongly condemned his remarks.
On May 4, there was a terrorist attack on an Indian Air Force convoy in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, in which a soldier died. Channi had earlier also criticized the BJP for indulging in political stunts ahead of the elections. However, amid growing pressure and controversy, Channi clarified his stand, saying that the government has failed to trace the perpetrators of the 2019 Pulwama attack.
