New Delhi. President Draupadi Murmu gave a message to the country on Wednesday night, a day before Independence Day 2024. On this occasion, apart from India’s strong economy, she praised the performance of Indian athletes in the recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024. A month ago, Team India won the T20 World Cup on West Indies soil. President Murmu also mentioned Rohit Sharma and company during her speech. In her address, President Murmu credited PM Modi’s government for the progress made in the field of sports in the last decade. President Murmu said, “Our players have performed brilliantly on the global stage and their recent achievements will inspire generations to come.”

President Murmu spoke about the rapid growth of India’s economy. It was told that between the years 2020-21 and 2023-24, there was an average annual GDP growth rate of 8%. India has emerged as the fifth largest global economy. She said that the country will soon be among the top three economies of the world.

Paris Olympics…
India won six medals in the Paris Olympics, including one silver and five bronze medals. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was the only silver medalist. Pistol shooter Manu Bhaker became the first Indian to win two medals in the same stage of the Olympics after independence by winning bronze medals in the individual 10 meter air pistol as well as the 10 meter air pistol mixed team (with Sarabjot Singh).

The President referred to the recent T20 World Cup victory of the Indian cricket team which brought joy to fans across the country. The win gave the team its first ICC trophy in 11 years. It was followed by a grand victory parade in Mumbai which was attended by thousands of supporters. Highlighting the growing dominance of chess in India, President Murmu praised the achievements of young players like D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa and suggested that their success marked the beginning of the ‘Indian era in chess’.

Badminton, Tennis…
He said that Indian young players are also making progress in badminton, tennis and other sports, which is inspiring the next generation to achieve excellence. Murmu said, “In badminton, tennis and other sports, our youth are making their mark on the world stage. Their achievements have also inspired the next generation.”
