The bail granted on medical grounds to Varavara Rao, an accused in the Elgar Parishad Maoist link case, has been extended. The Bombay High Court on Saturday decided to extend the bail period of poet and activist Rao till March 3.
The 82-year-old Rao got bail for the first time on health grounds from the High Court in February 2021 for six months. He was also asked not to leave Mumbai. Thereafter he applied for extension of bail and then for permanent bail.
Since September 2021, the court has extended the time given to him to surrender several times. On Saturday, Rao’s lawyers mentioned the fresh plea for extension of his bail before a division bench of Justices SB Shukre and AM Borkar.
Rao has said in the petition that as per the medical reports I have asymptomatic (without symptoms) Parkinson’s disease, neurological problems and I am also suffering from severe abdominal pain. He also requested Baglav on the condition of not leaving Mumbai for bail.
He requested that I be allowed to go to my home state Telangana. The court extended the date of his surrender till March 3 and said that we will hear the petition on March 1. Besides Rao, several other activists have been arrested.
