New York: The excitement about the presidential election in America is increasing. Billionaire industrialist Elon Musk has shared a tampered video on social media. In the video, the voice of the Democratic Party’s potential candidate Kamala Harris has been imitated and things have been said which the Vice President has never said. This video has raised concerns about the power of AI to mislead in elections. The video attracted people’s attention when Musk shared it on his social media platform ‘X’ on Friday evening, although he did not clearly state that it was originally released as a parody (a video in which someone’s voice and style are imitated to ridicule him).

what the video said

Some real scenes of Harris have been added to this video, but the voice heard in the background that matches Harris’s is not actually hers. In the video, a voice resembling Harris’s says, “I, Kamala Harris, am your Democratic candidate for president because Joe Biden has finally exposed in the debate that he is old.” The video says that Harris “knows nothing about running a country.” Some authentic old clips of Harris have also been added to the video.

What did Harris’ campaign spokeswoman say?

Harris campaign spokeswoman Mia Ehrenberg said in an email to the Associated Press, “We believe the American people want the real freedom, opportunity, and security that Vice President Harris is offering, not the fake, manipulated lies spread by Elon Musk and Donald Trump.” The video, which is being widely shared, is an example of how images, videos, or audio clips by AI are being used to mock and mislead in politics at a time when the US presidential election is about to take place. The video highlights how high-quality AI tools have become more accessible but there is still a lack of significant action to regulate their use.

“This is fantastic,” Musk wrote.

The social media user ‘Mr. Reagan’ who first posted the video has mentioned on both ‘Youtube’ and ‘X’ that this manipulated video is a ‘parody’, but Musk shared this video from his account and wrote only this much in the title with a laughing ’emoji’ – “This is awesome”. The video shared by Musk has been viewed by 12 crore 30 lakh people. Musk had supported Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump in the presidential election earlier this month. Rob Weissman, co-president of the ‘Public Citizen’ group, expressed concern over the use of AI in politics in this way and said that he feels that many people will not be able to differentiate between the real and fake voice in the video.
