Rahul Gandhi made a demand to the Election Commission
Questioning the credibility of EVMs, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday asked the Election Commission to either ensure complete transparency in the machines and processes or remove them. The demand comes a day after the Congress leader alleged that the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is a “black box” and no one is allowed to examine it and alleged that serious concerns are being raised over the transparency of the electoral process. “When democratic institutions are captured, the only safeguard lies in an electoral process that is transparent to the public,” Gandhi said in a post on X.
Rahul Gandhi said- either EVMs should be removed
The former Congress president said, “EVMs are currently a black box. The Election Commission should either ensure complete transparency of the machines and processes or remove them.” Another Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said, “Before considering electronic voting machines infallible, the Election Commission of India should release the data of how many EVMs were found to be faulty during elections.” He said the Election Commission should disclose how many machines recorded wrong time, date and wrong votes during the general elections and how many EVM components – counting unit, ballot unit – were replaced and how many EVMs were found to be faulty during mock polls.
Gaurav Gogoi tweeted
“After contesting the election I can say with full confidence that these machines have shown incorrect results. I hope the Election Commission will release the above data as the public has a right to know,” Gogoi said in a post on X. Gogoi’s statement came a day after fresh political row erupted over claims of EVM tampering. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders cited a media report alleging that a relative of the Shiv Sena candidate in Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency was found using a mobile phone “connected” to an electronic voting machine during vote counting on June 4. Returning officer Vandana Suryavanshi, however, dismissed the Mid-Day newspaper’s report as “false news” and said a defamation notice has been issued to the publication.
