Paris. German Chancellor Olaf Scolz said that Europe should continue Ukraine’s support and also emphasized that no dictatorial peace can be imposed on Ukraine. He said that Ukraine should be confident that Europe stands with him and will keep helping him.
Scolz made the statement after an emergency meeting, which was called by French President Emmanuel Macron. The meeting was held before the talks between Russia and the United States, in which European countries discussed their strategy. Scolz said that Ukraine cannot accept any peace that is forced.
The German Chancellor urged Europe and the United States to work together for collective security and said that the strength of NATO is to work together and share risks. He emphasized that no question should be raised on this unity.
When asked if the European countries could send the grassroots army to Ukraine under the Peace Mission, Scolz described it as “prematurely” and said that it would not be right to discuss it right now. However, he definitely said that European countries are ready to spend at least two percent of their GDP on the defense budget to strengthen their safety.
In addition, Germany supports that if European countries spend more on their defense, this expenditure should not be included in their budget deficit calculation.
The meeting was attended by leaders of NATO and European commission as well as representatives from several European countries including France, Germany, Britain, Poland, Spain, Italy, Denmark and Netherlands. Its main objective was to create a shared European response before the talks between Russia and the United States. However, neither Brussels nor Kiev have been invited to this dialogue.
