The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways also emphasized on battery swapping technology during his address on ‘Rebuilding Infrastructure for India 2.0’ under ‘Reimagining India 2.0 Series’.
Gadkari said, “US-based companies can collaborate with our research and development report towards EV factory technology and retrofitting industry. The government is strongly promoting best charging mechanisms for solar and electric mobility.”
Gadkari said the government is working on a battery-swapping policy and standards for EV batteries. He said that this is a big opportunity for all technology as battery swapping is a completely new sector.
Huge Opportunities for Joint Ventures
Gadkari said, “Both countries have a huge pool of young and talented engineers working on the most advanced technologies. I sincerely hope that you will come forward and take advantage of the advanced technology in the fields of construction, alternative, custom and agricultural practices. Will form a joint venture for
Gadkari urged American companies to come and invest in India. “Technocrats like you can participate in the drive to develop the best system for India,” he said. He said that India is allowing 100 per cent FDI in the road sector and there are huge opportunities for joint ventures. Currently, Taiwanese company Gogoro has joined hands with Indian electric two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp and Ather Energy for a battery-swapping network in India. There are many electric two wheelers in India at the moment that come with swappable batteries. EV makers such as Okinawa Autotech, Simple Energy, Bounce are some of the brands that manufacture electric two-wheelers with such technology. Extending the network of battery-swapping technology in India will not only help such models, but will also provide an alternative to the plug-and-charge mechanism used in some other electric vehicles. Gogoro’s battery swapping eco-system is a leading provider of charging solutions for Light Urban Electric Vehicles. In less than five years, it has generated revenue of over US$ 1 billion (Rs 76 billion 83 crore) and serves over 4.5 lakh battery swap customers.
