Sometimes due to gas and sometimes due to acidity, whatever the stomach problem may be, it cripples a person. Wherever you go, you start feeling ashamed of yourself. You don’t feel like working. In such a situation, every kind of work gets affected. Why does gas form in the stomach, what are the reasons behind it, News 18 spoke to Dr. Shrihari Anikhind, Consultant, Institute of Gastroenterology and Pancreatic Biliary Sciences at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He told that in gas the stomach becomes heavy and starts getting tight, this is called bloating in medical language. There can be many reasons for this.
Causes of gas formation in the stomach
Dr. Shrihari Anikhindi has told that 100 to 150 ml of gas is always present in the stomach of every person. This gas is formed due to billions of bacteria present in our stomach. Actually, when we eat food, this food is also called bacteria and after eating it, it ferments, during this, gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrous sulfide, methane are formed. When this gas starts forming more, then bloating starts in the stomach. Now there can be many reasons for this excessive fermentation. There are some foods which are very much liked by the bacteria of the stomach and they eat it more with great gusto and this leads to the formation of more gases.
There is also more gas formation in the stomach in case of many types of diseases. Dr. Shrihari Anikhindi told that there are many reasons for more gas formation in the stomach of some people. More gas is also formed in the stomach due to Crohn’s disease, liver disease, cancer, diverticulitis etc. More gas is also formed in the stomach due to infection. There is also a possibility of more gas formation when the intestine or bladder gets blocked. However, the biggest reason for more gas formation is irritable bowel syndrome i.e. IBS. More gases can also be formed due to pelvic inflammatory disease. Most people in India have lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance means that more gas is formed in the stomach after eating milk. Because less lactase enzyme is produced in the stomach to digest milk.
How to get rid of this
Dr. Shrihari Anikhindi said, if you have been having gas problems for a long time, then first find out why so much gas is being produced. Milk, some fibrous vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, beans etc. can also cause more gas. So stop eating these things. Also, first correct your lifestyle by exercising daily, eating fiber-rich food, avoiding fried foods. Most stomach problems can be cured by correcting the lifestyle and taking a healthy diet. Gas can also increase due to stress and depression. So do yoga and meditation too. Exercise is most important. If even after this the gas problem is increasing, then consult a doctor. After examination, it will be known what is the cause of the disease.
