New Delhi. The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict today on the petitions filed against the 10 per cent reservation (EWS quota) in education and government jobs to the economically weaker sections. This decision of the bench will come at around 10.30 am. According to the cause list of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice Dinesh Maheshwari will give a verdict. Whereas, the other members of the bench, Justices Ravindra Bhat, Bela Trivedi and JB Pardiwala, will pronounce separate judgments. Now everyone’s eyes are on whether all the judges have the same opinion or give different opinion. If the opinion of the majority ie at least 3 judges is the same, then the decision will be valid. Otherwise the matter will be referred to a larger bench of 7 or 9 judges.

The provision of giving 10 percent reservation to the economically weaker sections was made by the Modi government through the 103rd amendment of the Constitution. An application was filed against this in the Supreme Court. Those who filed the petition argued that according to the rules, there cannot be more than 50 percent reservation. Apart from this, it was also argued that SC, ST and OBC are also poor. Then why this reservation is being given to the general category only.
In the Supreme Court, a 5-judge Constitution Bench headed by the Chief Justice had reserved the decision after hearing. The Chief Justice is going to retire on 8 November i.e. tomorrow. In such a situation, today he is going to give a verdict on the important issue. Explain that under the rules of reservation, it is already decided to give 15 percent reservation to SC, 7.5 percent to ST and 27 percent to OBC. In such a situation, today’s decision of the Supreme Court is going to prove to be very important for the common class.
