Fire breaks out in Chinese cargo ship (symbolic photo)
Beijing: A cargo ship carrying dangerous goods caught fire after a powerful explosion at a major port on China’s Pacific coast, state media and officials said on Friday. Surveillance camera video was broadcast online by state broadcaster CCTV. The video showed a large cloud of white smoke followed by an orange and yellow fireball. The incident caused panic at the port.
‘There is no report of any casualty’
According to CCTV channel, there were no reports of any casualties in the explosion and subsequent fire at Ningbo Zhoushan port, located south of Shanghai. This port is one of the largest ports in the world. It is believed that a container placed on the ship exploded, after which the fire broke out.
No information was given about this
Pictures posted by CCTV channel showed black smoke rising from a pile of containers at one end of the ship and from a part of the port. The rest of the ship and its containers appeared safe. Zhejiang Province Emergency Management Administration said the ship was carrying category-five hazardous materials, although it did not provide information about what these materials were. (Language)
