Mumbai. Doctors said that a female resident doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient and his relatives at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital on Sunday morning. They said that all the relatives of the patient who attacked the female resident doctor were in an inebriated state. This news has come at a time when the horrific rape-murder incident of a trainee doctor at a hospital in Kolkata has shaken the entire country.
Resident doctors said that the attack took place at the hospital around 3.30 am when the woman doctor was on duty in the ward. The accused patient came to the hospital with injuries on his face and while he was being treated, he and his relatives abused and threatened the doctor. After this, the patient was assaulted by a group of 5-6 drunk people. The woman doctor said that she got injured while trying to protect herself.
Dr Akshay More, head of the BMC Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors, told NDTV, “This incident happened at 3:30 am today where a patient and some of his relatives arrived at the hospital in an inebriated state and started quarrelling with the female resident doctor. It is a matter of great concern that this is happening in Mumbai.” After this, the patient and his family fled from the spot. The doctor has given his statement at the Sion Police Station regarding the incident and a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered.
Doctors from BMC Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors, the body representing resident doctors of Sion Hospital, also reached the police station and said that “this dangerous incident shows that there is no security even in places like hospitals and it highlights the failure of the administration.” They said, “The safety of our doctors cannot be compromised. This situation needs immediate attention and strict security measures need to be implemented in all hospitals.”
