Sydney. Three people have died in a fire at a boarding house in Sydney, while one is in critical condition. Police said on Tuesday that the cause of the fire was “suspicious”. Firefighters were called to a two-level boarding house in Newtown, a suburb in Sydney’s inner west, Xinhua news agency reported.
Firefighters said it took about two hours to bring the fire under control.
One body was recovered from the rubble in the morning, while two more bodies were recovered in the afternoon.
Police said the fourth person who survived the fire is in critical condition at a central Sydney hospital.
New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Peter Cotter said in a statement that the incident was being investigated as a murder.
“We are treating it suspicious. It was an explosion. The flames caught on very quickly,” he said.
“It would be fair to say that some sort of accelerator has been used. We are treating it as a murder.”
Residents of nearby buildings have been evacuated due to instability in the boarding house after the fire.
