It is said that crime and familyism in politics are two sides of the same coin. Many politicians have a criminal image. In the fifth phase of the UP assembly elections, 693 candidates are contesting, out of which 27% have criminal cases registered. Many leaders have lost their lives because of this politics. Some have lost their entire family, while others’ husband is serving a sentence in jail. Today we are telling you the story of five such candidates.
In the first story two stories are intertwined. One is related to Pratappur seat and the other is related to the candidate of Meja seat. Vijma Yadav is the candidate of Samajwadi Party from Pratappur seat of Prayagraj. Vijma’s husband Jawahar Yadav alias Jawahar Pandit became MLA from Jhunsi seat in 1993 on SP ticket. In those days, the work of sand mining in and around Prayagraj was with the family of Jagat Narayan Karwaria. His sons Kapil Muni Karwaria, Udaybhan Karwaria, Surajbhan Karwaria were involved in the business of carpets, furniture and real estate with sand contracts. There was a rift between Jawahar and Karwaria’s family over the contract for sand. Soon this rift turned into enmity.
On 13 August 1996, Jawahar was returning home from the party office in his car. Meanwhile, a car overtaking stopped Jawahar’s car in the poshest area of Prayagraj, Civil Lines. The people who came out of the car were carrying AK-47, rifle and revolver. Everyone attacked Jawahar. This was the first time someone was attacked with AK-47 in Prayagraj. Kapilmuni Karwaria, Udaybhan Karwaria, Surajbhan Karwaria and two others were accused of this murder. One of the accused died sometime after the incident. The case went on for 23 years from the Lower Court to the Supreme Court. On 4 November 2019, the court found the four accused guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment under Sections 302, 307, 147, 148, 149 of the IPC and Section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act. All the brothers are still in jail.
Amidst allegations of Jawahar Pandit’s murder, the Karwaria family took a foothold in politics. The eldest Kapil Muni Karwaria has been an MP from BSP. At the same time, Udaybhan Karwaria was elected MLA from BJP twice. Surajbhan Karwaria was MLC during Mayawati’s tenure. Now, Udaybhan’s wife Neelam Karwaria is handling the family’s political legacy. This time also Neelam is in the fray from Meja on a BJP ticket.
On the other hand, after the assassination of Jawahar Pandit, his political legacy was taken over by his wife Vijma. She was elected MLA in 1996, 2002 and 2012 elections. This time too, Vijma is contesting from Pratappur seat. His daughter Jyoti became the block chief in 2016 from Phulpur. However, after a year, he had to step down due to a no-confidence motion. This story is also from Prayagraj. Here on January 25, 2005, BSP MLA from Allahabad West, Raju Pal was shot dead. This murder was done in a film style. At that time Raju was going towards his house from Rani Nehru Hospital in Prayagraj’s Swaroop in his car. Meanwhile, a car overtaking Raju Pal’s car and parked it in the middle. As soon as Raju Pal’s car stopped, the miscreants opened fire from the front. The MLA and two more people sitting in the car with him died.
Raju Pal was married to Pooja Pal 10 days before the incident. Pooja filed a case against the then MP and Bahubali Ateeq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf and three others in connection with the murder of her husband. After the murder of the MLA, a ruckus started in Prayagraj. To calm it down, the police imposed curfew. Curfew was imposed in Prayagraj for 10 days.
On the other hand, after the murder of her husband, BSP chief Mayawati gave ticket to Pooja. Pooja was defeated in the by-election, but after that she won in 2007 and again in 2012. This time Pooja is contesting on Samajwadi Party ticket from Chail seat of Kaushambi district.
Gayatri Prasad Prajapati. This name is very popular. Gayatri Prajapati has been a minister in the Akhilesh government. Mulayam Singh is considered close to Yadav. Gayatri and her associates were accused of gang-raping a minor girl. Gayatri Prajapati has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the court in this case of gang rape on 12 November 2021. This time SP has fielded his wife Maharaj from Amethi seat. Dr. Sanjay Singh from the royal family of BJP is in the fray against Gayatri Prajapati’s wife Maharaja Pratapati. This time the contest from Gosainganj seat of Ayodhya is going to be very tough. From here, BJP has given ticket to Aarti Tiwari, wife of Khabbri Tiwari, who won the party in 2017. Aarti is taking care of her husband’s legacy. Khabbu has been sentenced to five years in jail by a special court in the fake certificate case. Khabbu’s legislature has also gone and he is currently serving his sentence. Samajwadi Party has given ticket to Bahubali Abhay Singh against Aarti.
