Lieutenant General Sadhana Saxena Nair

Lieutenant General Sadhana Saxena Nair will take over as Director General of Medical Services (Army) from August 1. She will be the first woman to be appointed to this prestigious post. Earlier, she was also the first woman to take over as Director General of Hospital Services (Armed Forces) after promotion to the rank of Air Marshal.

Last year, when Sadhana Saxena Nair took over as Director General of Hospital Services (Armed Forces), Air Force officials had said, “Air Marshal Sadhana Saxena Nair, an Indian Air Force officer, is effectively only the second woman officer to have risen to the rank of Air Marshal after serving in various capacities in the Air Force throughout her career. Air Force Chief VR Choudhary was also present at the assumption of charge.”

Commissioned into Army Medical Corps in 1985

Lieutenant General Sadhana Nair started her schooling from St. Mary’s Convent, Prayagraj and completed her education from Loreto Convent, Lucknow. In the meantime, she went to schools in Tezpur, Gorakhpur, Kanpur and Chandigarh. She graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune with a distinguished academic record and was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in December 1985. Sadhana Nair holds a postgraduate degree in Family Medicine. She has also completed a two-year training program in Medical Informatics at AIIMS, New Delhi.

Lieutenant General Sadhana received training in CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) warfare and military medical ethics abroad. She was the first and only female Chief Medical Officer of the Western Air Command and Training Command. Sadhana has also been awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal. She has also received commendations from the Chief of Air Staff and the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief.
