Ranchi. Ranchi: Former Jharkhand minister and Congress MLA Bandhu Tirkey has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs. In default of payment of fine, he will have to undergo additional imprisonment of 6 months. The court of Special Judge Prabhat Kumar Sharma of CBI Court gave this verdict on Wednesday afternoon.
Bandhu Tirkey is an MLA from Mandar assembly constituency in Ranchi district and also working president of Jharkhand Pradesh Congress. It is believed that according to the legal provisions, his membership of the assembly can be canceled after being punished.
Bandhu Tirkey was a minister in the cabinet of then Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda for about 23 months from the year 2006 to 2008. While being a minister, he was accused of having acquired assets worth Rs.6 lakh 28 thousand more than his income. The CBI had registered an FIR against him on August 11, 2010, after a petition was filed in the Jharkhand High Court in this regard. He was arrested and sent to jail in this case. In the case, the chargesheet was filed by the CBI in 2013, but a few months later, the CBI had filed a closure report in the court in May 2013, in which it was told that Tirkey has disproportionate assets, but not as much as his. Go on trial. Taking cognizance of the matter, the court had issued a notice rejecting the CBI’s argument. The trial was held on the directions of the court. Charges were framed against Bandhu Tirkey on 16 January 2019. In this case, 21 witnesses were produced for the prosecution and 8 for the defense.
