Johannesburg: Big political developments have been seen in South Africa. Former South African President Jacob Zuma will not be able to stand in the general elections to be held in the country on May 29. This is because he has been disqualified as a candidate due to his criminal record. This information has been given by the Election Commission. The commission held a media briefing on Thursday in which it said it had upheld the objection lodged against Zuma’s candidacy in the May 29 elections.
Zuma has time to appeal
The IEC said Zuma was disqualified from contesting the election because of his criminal record. “We are all in unanimity,” said IEC chair Mosotho Moepya. These are not matters with which we deal individually. Here we are talking about a provision of the law against which an objection can also be filed.” Moepya said that Zuma has time till April 2 to appeal against this decision.
Zuma was dismissed from the party
It is noteworthy that, in 2021, Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in jail by the Constitutional Court of South Africa for leaving the commission of inquiry hearing midway. Zuma was dismissed by his party ‘African National Congress’ in 2018. There was a lot of anger among the people over Zuma’s alleged closeness to the self-exiled Gupta family, only after which the ANC took the step of dismissing Zuma from the party. The Gupta family is accused of defrauding state-owned enterprises like ‘Eskom’ worth billions. These institutions are now facing financial crisis. The electricity distribution company ‘Eskom’ is not able to meet the needs of the country and rail transport has also come to a standstill. Language
