Former Supreme Court judge Justice Nanavati, who headed the commission of inquiry into the 1984 riots and 2002 Godhra riots, passed away on Saturday. Justice Nanavati started his legal practice in the year 1958 from the Bombay High Court. In the year 1979, he was appointed as a judge of the Gujarat High Court. After being made a judge in the Gujarat High Court, he was transferred to the Orissa High Court in 1993.

Justice Nanavati was born on 17 February 1935. After this he took over the post of judge in the Supreme Court on 6 March 1995. He remained a judge of the Supreme Court till 16 February 2000. After his retirement from the Supreme Court, he headed the commissions set up to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the 2002 Godhra riots.
