Quoting market data, the report said that in the calendar year 2022 so far, foreign institutional investors have sold shares worth a total of Rs 2,02,244 crore. Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Adviser, Geojit Financial Services said that FPIs have seen heavy selling from the Indian markets as compared to other emerging markets like Taiwan and South Korea.
He said the strengthening of the dollar and rise in bond yields in the US have been the main reasons for selling of FPIs. The Fed and other central banks such as the Bank of England and the Swiss Central Bank have raised rates, so rising yields are accompanied by simultaneous rate hikes globally. Vijayakumar said that money is being transferred from equities to bonds. During this period, FPIs in India continued to sell in finance and IT, where they hold the largest share.
