Last January was not a special month for Hyundai, the leading automaker of South Korea. The company recently launched its new 7 seater car Alcazar in the Indian market and the second generation model of Creta is already present in the market. But in the month of January, even these two vehicles could not handle the sales of the company. Hyundai has presented its sales report, according to which sales have registered a decline of 11% in the month of January.
According to the report released, the company sold a total of 53,427 units of vehicles in the month of January last year, which is 11% less than the total 60,105 units sold in the month of January last year. The company said domestic sales declined 15.35 per cent last month to 44,022 units as against 52,005 units in January 2021. However, exports have increased to 9,405 units as compared to 8,100 units in January last year.
Hyundai Motor India said in a statement, “The company is closely monitoring the ongoing semiconductor supply shortage situation and will make all efforts to meet customer demand.” The sales of many automakers have been affected due to semiconductors, in the Union Budget yesterday, an announcement has been made to improve the manufacturing of semiconductors. It is expected that in the coming time this problem will be resolved soon.
Despite the chip crisis, Hyundai has maintained its leadership in the SUV segment over the past two years. The carmaker sold over 1.8 lakh and 2.5 lakh SUVs in 2020 and last year respectively. The company sold 1.25 lakh units of the new generation Creta in 2021 alone and has sold over 2.15 lakh units of this model since its launch in March 2020. However, due to the chip crisis, the waiting period of the company’s SUV models has increased significantly, which includes vehicles like Venue and Alcazar.
