Pullela Gopichand, who earned the name of Dronacharya of badminton, won the national championship five times in a row from 1996 to 2000. In 2001, Gopichand became the second Indian to win the All England Open Badminton Championship. He also opened an academy to promote other youths in badminton, prominent among whom is PV Sindhu, who won the country’s first silver medal in badminton at the Olympics. Apart from Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, many other great players of India have been a part of Gopichand’s academy.
