new Delhi . Days after the Congress Working Committee meeting, senior party leader Kapil Sibal on Tuesday demanded that “Gandhis should be given a chance to lead the party apart from the leadership role”. Since the 2014 election defeat, the Congress has lost successive elections except on a few occasions. He said, “CWC has expressed confidence in the party leadership, but people outside CWC feel that otherwise many have left the party and new leaders. Someone else should be given a chance to lead the party.”
Sibal is one of the signatories to a letter to Sonia Gandhi seeking reforms within the party, but sources at the CWC meeting on Sunday said that Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma did not raise the issue of leadership change.
At the CWC on Sunday, Sonia Gandhi along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had offered to step down from the leadership, but it was turned down by the CWC.
The Congress Working Committee on Sunday exuded confidence in interim party president Sonia Gandhi after its marathon meeting to discuss the results of the assembly elections. He was also authorized to make ‘necessary and comprehensive’ organizational changes.
The CWC unanimously reaffirmed its faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and urged the Congress President to lead from the front, address the organizational weaknesses, meet the political challenges necessary and effect wider organizational changes.
