Panaji. Goa Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik has said that water should be privatized. For this, excess rain water should be stopped by building a network of dams in the state and water should be exported to Gulf countries in exchange for fuel.
Speaking at a government function on Wednesday, Naik also said that the collected water can also be sent to drought-prone areas of Maharashtra.
“We can export water to foreign countries and import petrol,” Naik said. Goa receives about 126 inches of rain. If we stop this water by building dams all over Goa, then this scheme can prove to be beneficial for us.
The work should be given to a private company and there should be a dam in every taluka, he said. We can send water to Arab countries or even Maharashtra.
Naik said, if Arab countries can charge us for petrol extracted from under the earth, then we should do the same with water, which we can do by withholding rain water.
It doesn’t require a lot of engineering, he added. Just build a dam on two mountains.
Naik’s statement comes at a time when many parts of the state are facing acute water shortage for months.
