Data released by the Ministry of Statistics stated that the LFPR among men aged 15 years or above has increased to 74.7 percent in April-June 2024, which was 73.5 percent in April-June. At the same time, the LFPR among women aged 15 years or above has increased to 25.2 percent in April-June 2024, which was 23.2 percent in April-June 2023.
The fall in unemployment
The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) is an important indicator of the employment rate among people above the age of 15 years. It increased to 46.8 percent in April-June 2024 from 45.5 percent in the same period last year. According to the data, the unemployment rate among people aged 15 years or above in urban areas was 6.6 percent in April-June 2024. The unemployment rate among men aged 15 years or above has come down to 5.8 percent in April-June 2024 as against 5.9 percent in April-June 2023. At the same time, the unemployment rate among women aged 15 years or above was 9 percent in April-June 2024, this figure was 9.1 percent in April-June 2023.
Using a rotational panel sampling design
The information given by the ministry said that rotational panel sampling design has been used to collect data in urban areas. Considering the importance of labor force data, the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) was launched by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in April 2017. PLFS had two main objectives. The first objective is to collect important data of employment and unemployment in urban areas for a short period of three months such as labor force participation rate and worker population ratio. The second objective is to estimate employment and unemployment indicators in both ‘usual status’ and ‘current weekly status’ CWS in both rural and urban areas annually.
