The government can implement the suggestion of making the fees of 50 percent seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities at par with the government medical colleges of the respective states and union territories from the coming session. This suggestion was given by the National Medical Commission on 3 February. According to sources, the fee fixation committee of the medical colleges of the states will also have to compulsorily implement these rules.

According to the NMC’s Office Memorandum, the benefit of fee waiver for medical colleges will be made available earlier to those students who have availed government quota seats but are limited to 50 per cent seats of the total capacity of the institution concerned. After this, if the government quota seats in the concerned private medical college are less than 50 percent of the total seats, then other students will also be given the benefit of this facility according to the merit.
Government had requested
As per Section 10(1)(i) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, the panel will frame guidelines for fixation of fees and all other charges for 50 per cent seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities. The Central Government had earlier requested the then Board of Governors under MCI to frame guidelines for fixation of fees for NMC. After this, an expert committee was constituted by BOG-MCI on 23rd November, 2019 and going forward on behalf of NMC.
Public opinion was also taken
The expert committee had recommended implementation of 26 guidelines for fee fixation for MBBS and PG courses. Efforts were also made to know the opinion of common people on these recommendations. The guidelines were also uploaded on the official website of NMC where, over 1800 people gave their feedback. Thereafter, another expert committee was constituted by the NMC on November 21, 2021. This committee prepared a revised draft after reviewing the reactions of the general public. This was accepted by the NMC in the meeting on December 29, 2021.
