In fact, the government has called a meeting of e-commerce companies and organizations associated with online reviews to discuss the quality control order to curb fake reviews. This has been said in the notice of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. The ministry has also released a draft of the Online Consumer Reviews (Quality Control) Order, 2024. It is proposed to accept reviews only from verified buyers and users of the product. According to the notice, e-commerce companies connecting customers and sellers and organizations involved in review under the Quality Control Order (QCO) have been asked to declare self-compliance with the prescribed requirements.

It said that the organization concerned needs to register with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and declare compliance with the rules. In this regard, a meeting of the parties concerned has been called on May 15, 2024, under the chairmanship of the Secretary, to discuss the draft QCO.” The draft Quality Control Order states that organizations will not publish reviews that they themselves or Purchased and written from the supplier, seller or any third party.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has proposed that all organizations managing and publishing online consumer reviews will comply with the rules. This also includes prohibition on publishing fake reviews and registering themselves as ‘Review Administrators’ with BIS declaring their own level of compliance with the requirements laid down in the order.
