New Delhi: There is great news for Indians who wish to go to America. This time America will issue visas to Indians in huge numbers. Let us tell you that last year America had issued a record 1,40,000 student visas. After this, now the US Consulate in India is fully prepared to deal with the possible increase in applications from Indian students this year. A senior embassy official said that the estimated total number this year will be “equal to or more than” last year.
The US Mission in India on Thursday celebrated its eighth annual Student Visa Day across the country. Under this, Consulate officers in New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai interviewed student visa applicants. Long queues of students were seen at the US Embassy in Delhi since morning. A large number of Indian students study in American universities and last year the US Consulate in India issued over 1,40,000 student visas, more than any other country.
4 thousand students will be interviewed in one day
Syed Mujtaba Andrabi, the acting Consul General at the US Embassy, said it is estimated that about 4,000 students will be interviewed throughout the day. He said, “This (student visa) is one of our top priorities. Educational exchange between the two countries is one of the top priorities of this administration and our mission. Last year, we issued a record number of student visas, which was 1,40,000, which is a record. We will continue to focus on this area. When asked about a possible increase in student visas in 2024, he said, “It will be the same or more than last year.”
America will give priority to student visa
US Ambassador Eric Garcetti said in an interview in April that the US gives “high priority” to student visas because it knows that people-to-people relationships “last a lifetime.” The US embassy said in a statement that the number of Indians choosing to study in the US has increased significantly in the last three years. In 2023, the US mission issued “more visas than the total student visas issued in 2018, 2019 and 2020.” It said that this “unprecedented increase” reflects the US government’s commitment to prioritise students and facilitate their travel, while the mission met a 400 per cent increase in demand for all other visas between 2021 and 2023.
