Took help of ATS to arrest Patel
The chairman is accused of using fake invoices worth Rs 762 crore to claim bogus input tax credit of Rs 137 crore. Earlier, Nilesh Patel, Chairman, Madhav Copper Limited, was arrested by the GST team and he managed to escape after hitting a vehicle of the GST officials. But this time to arrest Patel took the help of ATS.
Fraud exposed in July last year
Patel is accused of causing damage to the state exchequer by issuing fake challans worth Rs 762 crore for receiving Rs 137 crore in bogus input tax credit, the department said in a release. The state’s GST department had uncovered the fraud in July last year and arrested several people in this connection while the main accused Patel was absconding.
However, the department had confiscated his property when he did not appear before him. Also, the court had issued summons against him, to which he did not respond. The GST department said the businessman had fled during the first attempt to arrest him on February 20, 2022. The department then approached the ATS, who arrested him from Ahmedabad.
Documents seized in the raid
In raids conducted on the premises, offices and residences of its directors last year, the state GST had seized several incriminating documents including digital data. On February 11, 2022, the Supreme Court had rejected Patel’s anticipatory bail plea and granted him a week’s protection from arrest.
