Former Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday alleged that the government has stalled the river linking project in Gujarat due to opposition from the tribal population and the upcoming state elections. He said, “The BJP government has been forced to stop the Par-Tapi-Narmada river-linking project due to the upcoming Gujarat elections, as the grassroots movement protested the possible displacement of thousands of tribals. But Madhya Pradesh The disastrous Ken-Betwa link project is in progress.”
Sources said that after protests by the tribal community, BJP MPs met the Home Minister to stop the project and the decision was taken later.
Tribals are protesting against this project. They claim that this will destroy their livelihood in Valsad, Dang and Navsari districts.
It will connect the river on the project, which has its origin in Nashik and flows through Valsad in Gujarat. From Saputara, Tapi river flows through Surat and Narmada river originates from Madhya Pradesh. The project aims to transfer excess water from the Western Ghats to the regions of Saurashtra and Kutch using the Sardar Sarovar Project.
