Surat Airport in Gujarat has been declared an international airport. A notification regarding this has been issued by the government on Wednesday. Till now only Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (Ahmedabad) and Rajkot International Airport in Gujarat could operate international flights. On December 15 last year, a proposal to make Surat an international airport was passed by the Modi government cabinet.
Economic development will accelerate
The press release said that this strategic move promises to unleash unprecedented economic potential, making Surat a major player in the international aviation landscape and ushering in a new era of prosperity in the region.
The release further stated that granting international status to Surat Airport is paramount to enhance economic growth, attract foreign investment and strengthen diplomatic relations. With increased passenger traffic and cargo handling, the airport’s international designation will provide a significant boost to regional development.
Surat Airport got a new integrated terminal building in December 2023. This inauguration was done by PM Modi. The new integrated terminal building at Surat Airport has the capacity to handle 1,200 domestic passengers and 600 international passengers during peak hours. If needed, its capacity can be increased to 3000 passengers, taking its capacity to handle passengers up to 55 lakh per year. This airport has been built at a cost of about Rs 353 crore. According to the report, the government plans to connect Surat directly with cities like Bangkok, Malaysia and Singapore.
