United Nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the ongoing war in Ukraine is “threatening the global economy”. He further said that developing countries are most at risk.
Guterres said that this war underlines the attack on the most vulnerable people and countries in the world.
He added, “The prices of food, fuel and fertilizers are skyrocketing. Supply is getting disrupted. There is delay in arrival of goods from outside and the prices of existing commodities are very high.”
“The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) global food price index is at an all-time high,” the UN chief said.
The index, which measures changes in international prices of food commodities, reached 140.7 in February, the highest level in real terms since 1961.
Guterres also announced the creation of a Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance at the UN Secretariat to deal with these threats.
We will consult with willing Member States to take the necessary actions to advance the necessary global emergency response to these emerging crises.
The recovery that has come after recovering from the onslaught of two years of the Corona epidemic is worsened by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
“Even before the conflict, developing countries were struggling to recover from the pandemic with record inflation, rising interest rates and rising debt burdens and are now wiped out by rapid growth.”
“Now their basic needs are being bombarded. Russia and Ukraine represent more than half of the world’s sunflower oil and about 30 percent of the world’s wheat supply,” he said.
