Port-au-Prince: Security officials had to open fire to provide security to Haiti’s Prime Minister Gary Konile as he left a hospital in Port-au-Prince, the prime minister’s office said. The office said in a statement that Konile had visited Haiti’s largest hospital with National Police Chief Norman Rameau and some journalists when gunfire was heard outside the building. The statement said the prime minister had just finished recording an interview when gunfire was heard. It said security personnel fired a few shots as he and his entourage left.
No casualties reported
“The Prime Minister and his team safely left the hospital and were taken back to his office,” the statement said. No casualties were reported in the incident. Earlier this month, Konile and Haiti’s police chief visited the same hospital after authorities announced they had recaptured the hospital from armed gangs. At the time, Konile described what remained of the devastated hospital as a “war zone.”
The hospital is under the control of security personnel
A statement from Connally’s office on Friday said the hospital remains under the control of the U.N.-backed multinational security mission led by Haiti’s national police and Kenyan police that aims to help combat criminal gangs that have sparked widespread violence in Haiti. (AP)
