Dhaka: Days after 18 officers-in-charge were transferred, the chiefs of 32 police stations in Dhaka have been transferred, in a major reshuffle in the police department following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh, a media report said on Monday. The transfer order came on Sunday midnight, bdnews24.com news portal reported. With the latest transfer, the chiefs of all 50 police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have been transferred. Another 18 officers-in-charge were transferred on August 13. Those transferred will no longer have the powers they had as chiefs, the report said. These officers have been sent to training centres across the country, where they have been tasked with training police personnel. Others have been transferred to the tourist police, armed police battalions or industrial police.

There is an interim government in Bangladesh

There has been a reshuffle at all levels in the police since Sheikh Hasina stepped down from the post of Prime Minister on August 5. 76-year-old Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and went to India after massive protests by students against the controversial quota system in government jobs. After this, an interim government was formed in the country, and 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was appointed its chief advisor.

This was followed by the appointment of seven other officers to the posts of DMP deputy commissioner on the same day. On Sunday, 73 police officers were promoted to the rank of deputy inspector general and 31 of them were promoted from the rank of superintendent of police, receiving a double promotion.

how many people died

More than 230 people have been killed in incidents of violence that erupted across the country after the fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government. With this, the death toll has risen to more than 600 since the protests started by students in mid-July. According to the police headquarters, at least 44 policemen have been killed in the clashes.
