Pilgrims arrive in Mecca.
Riyadh: “Heat stroke” has created havoc from India to Saudi Arabia. According to AFP, the number of Haj pilgrims who died in Mecca due to “heat wave” this year has exceeded 1,000. More than half of them are unregistered worshipers who performed pilgrimage in extreme heat in Saudi Arabia. Many Indians are also among those who died. According to today’s report, 58 people from Egypt are included in the new deaths. It is being told that 1,081 Haj pilgrims from about 10 countries have died due to heat wave. While Reuters has confirmed the death of 652 people so far.
The National Meteorological Center recorded a maximum temperature of 51.8 degrees Celsius (125 degrees Fahrenheit) at Mecca’s Grand Mosque earlier this week. At some places, the temperature also crossed the 52 degree mark. Due to the scorching heat, pilgrims have also been seen falling unconscious at many places. According to a Saudi study published last month, the temperature in the region is rising by 0.4 degrees Celsius every decade. Every year thousands of pilgrims attempt to perform Hajj through irregular means as they often cannot afford the cost of expensive official permits.
The number of unregistered passengers is also quite high
Saudi authorities reported clearing hundreds of thousands of unregistered pilgrims from Mecca earlier this month, but it appears many still took part in the main rituals which began last Friday. The death toll in Mecca from the “heat wave” during the Haj pilgrimage has crossed 1,000. These include 68 Indians. Among the dead, 630 Haj pilgrims are said to be unregistered. The death toll may rise further. (Reuters)
