Colombo: Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka. Schools were closed on Monday due to floods caused by heavy rains. Landslides have also occurred at many places. Officials have given information about this. They said that at least 10 people have died and six others are missing in floods and other rain-related incidents. The Education Ministry said that the decision to reopen schools will depend on the weather conditions.
Heavy destruction due to rain
Torrential rains since Sunday have caused massive destruction in many places in the country, leaving houses, fields and roads inundated and forcing authorities to cut off power supply as a precaution. According to the Disaster Management Center, six people died on Sunday due to drowning and drowning in the capital Colombo and the remote Ratnapura district, while three others died when soil from the mountains fell on houses. One person died due to falling of a tree. Six people are missing since Sunday.
Navy and Army personnel deployed
The centre said in a statement that till Monday, more than 5,000 people have been taken to rescue centres and 400 houses have been damaged. Navy and Army personnel have been deployed to rescue the victims and deliver food and other essential items. The weather in Sri Lanka has been adverse since heavy monsoon rains in mid-May.
