Bangalore. Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday urged the parents of girl students and the BJP government in the state to explain the court’s decision on hijab, to ensure that their careers are not ruined. Shivakumar was recently speaking to reporters on the state government’s decision to bar girl students from wearing hijab in the crucial SSLC examination (Class 10) in the backdrop of the High Court verdict.
“Education of girl child is paramount. Girl students can make mistakes. But for this their future should not be harmed. Parents need to sit and talk with them,” he said.
The Congress leader said, “Religious leaders, parents and teachers should first reassure themselves and then convince the girl child. Children always listen to their teacher and mother is their first teacher.”
Asked about Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah’s demand to allow wearing of dupatta, Shivakumar said, “Congress stands by the Constitution. For us the Constitution is like Bible, Quran or Bhagavad Gita. I won’t say anything more than that.” “
“The court has given its verdict on hijab, to which some have agreed and some have not. I am not in a position to say whether the verdict is wrong or not,” Shivakumar said.
The state government will conduct the SSLC exam from March 28 to April 11. In this academic year 8,73,846 students have enrolled for the exam.
The exam will be conducted at 3,444 centers across the state. CCTV cameras have been installed at all the examination centers and prohibitory orders will be enforced around the examination venues.
The Karnataka High Court recently ordered a ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions. It is not considered necessary in Islam.
