The Karnataka High Court will deliver its verdict in the hijab controversy tomorrow i.e. on Tuesday 15 March. The dispute sparked large-scale violence in the southern state last month. Recently, a tense situation was witnessed in the educational institutions of Karnataka, especially in schools and colleges, regarding the hijab. The dispute here started with a government college in Udupi. Muslim girls insisted that they should be allowed to wear the hijab as it was their religious right. But the institutes did not agree to this, after which the matter went to the court.
The court has completed the hearing and now the final decision will come on the matter. In the wake of the Karnataka High Court’s verdict in the hijab case yesterday, the city police have banned any public gathering in Bengaluru, reported news agency ANI. “All types of gathering, movement, protest or function in public places are prohibited in Bengaluru for a week from March 15 to March 21,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said in an official order.
The full bench of the Karnataka High Court, which completed the hearing in the hijab case, is likely to pronounce its verdict on Tuesday. The issue had spread to other parts of the state after some Hindu students came across saffron shawls at Udupi Pre-University College demanding that a section of girls wear hijab inside their classrooms.
According to lawyers appearing for the petitioner girls from Udupi district, the matter related to hijab has been listed as number 1 for Tuesday and the court is likely to hear the active part of the judgment from 10.30 am.
