Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife Rinki Bhuyan have been summoned by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Kamrup metropolis. Both are accused of alleged violation of the model code of conduct during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Regarding this, the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate AK Barua, in an order issued on February 11, has directed both of them to appear in the court by February 25.
Significantly, Bhuiyan is the chairman-cum-managing director of an Assamese news channel. The election department had registered the case on April 10, 2019, after receiving complaints from the then president and general secretary of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
The case was registered by the Additional Chief Electoral Officer in May 2019 against Sarma and News Live TV channel for violating the model code of conduct. Sarma was then holding the charge of several departments in the cabinet of the then Sarbananda Sonowal government.
